The book is a gift and we should be grateful.
Dr. James, Psychologist has written an enlightening book about sexual trauma. This book sheds light on the victims, survivors and perpetrators and the process of thriving after experiencing an initial trauma or years of abuse. Dr. James describes a process of healing for both survivors and perpetrators with compassion a depth of understanding that comes from experience and healing.
Dr. James is one of the most talented clinicians I have ever known. Her book offers healing at the individual, family, and community levels. A must read for anyone impacted by sexual abuse, which is all of us!
This book is truly the voice of the first and second generations of immigrants that have struggled to cope with the dynamics of the Cabo Verde culture. The study's results validate the cries and experiences that for the most part do not get acknowledged.

Thank you for writing this book. We need to put a stop to these people who are ruining the lives of many innocent children. They are corrupting & breaking them down before they have any opportunity to experience life and happiness. We must protect our children from these wolves in sheep’s clothing. Your book is amazing. You are amazing. I have always loved & admired you my dear cousin. I love u & May God continue to bless u & your entire family ❤️❤️❤️
I was so happy to have read this book because it shed a light on many horror stories that I have heard about growing up in a Cape Verdean household. Too many children feels like they are all alone when it comes to sexual abuse. In Dr James book, Garden of Secrets, exposes the issue of sexual abuse in a particular community which in my view was so important because those victim and families can better relate to the issue at hand which in turn gives them the power to say enough is enough.
This book hit every point to the T. It made me feel like someone else could relate about my culture. I had to chuckle at some of the statements, only because I've heard these things in the past and still today. I also, bought this book for my mother in Portuguese for an easier read. I think this book helped break down and put a lot of things into perspective.
This book is what was missing to help many find there voices to feel empowered to speak up of the abuse that so many want to keep a secret. The reading is so simple, non judgmental and yet with so many examples that helps anyone understand the importance of not having secrets. Hope to see this book published in more languages!
